New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. has grown from a single limestone quarry into a vertically integrated construction materials and heavy highway contractor serving Pennsylvania and beyond.

A Century of Growth

Founded in 1924, NESL began as a family-owned limestone quarry and has evolved over five generations into a leading supplier of aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and heavy highway construction services.
1924
The Beginning

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. was established as a partnership between J.S. Detwiler and his son, Paul I. Detwiler. In its founding year, the company acquired a sand plant in Everett, Pennsylvania and completed its first construction project: a bridge in Bedford County, PA.

1940s-1950s
Expanding Capabilities

In 1954, four brothers expanded operations, adding precast concrete and concrete pipe plants, strengthening NESL’s footprint across the region.

1960s-1970s
Age of Growth

NESL expanded its operational footprint and strengthened its materials and construction capabilities, helping support highway, bridge, and infrastructure projects across Pennsylvania.

Strengthening the Lehigh Valley

NESL acquired Berks Products Corporation and EJB Paving, significantly expanding its presence and capabilities in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.

2018
Expansion into Northeastern Pennsylvania

The acquisition of Popple Construction, Inc. strengthened NESL’s construction capabilities in the Scranton and Northeastern Pennsylvania markets.

2019
Vintondale Sand Quarry Acquisition

NESL purchased the Vintondale Sand Quarry, expanding its raw material resources and supporting continued growth in construction materials supply.

2021
Hempt Brothers Acquisition

NESL acquired Hempt Brothers, Inc., a company with 96 years of history, adding significant new resources including:

  • 3 Hot Mix Asphalt Plants
  • 3 Quarries
  • 2 Ready-Mix Concrete Plants

This acquisition expanded NESL’s operational footprint and materials capabilities.

2022
Fifth Generation Leadership

Paul Detwiler III and Jeff Detwiler assumed ownership and leadership of the company, continuing the Detwiler family’s multi-generation stewardship of NESL.

Celebrating 100 Years

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. celebrated 100 years of building infrastructure and supporting communities, marking a century of family ownership, growth, and commitment to quality construction materials and projects.
